Day 10 - Gallup NM to Flagstaff AZ - 222 miles

Petrified Forest National Park AZ

Crossing now into Arizona, our first stop is the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. We spent four hours touring this National Park (another validation in the National Park Passport), and pictures do not do it justice.

This National Park is the only one that Route 66 originally passed through.  Marking that spot is this old Studebaker.

Holbrook AZ

The Wigwam Motel is the highlight in Holbrook. Unfortunately, we were not able to book a stay at this classic Route 66 spot... but we did get photos.

Joseph City AZ

Built in 1949, The Jackrabbit Trading Post was a local Route 66 staple.  Advertised by billboards up to 500 miles away, it became a mainstay for early vacationers.  Still in business, it still gives a campy flashback to those by gone days.

Winslow AZ

Thanks to The Eagles "Take It Easy", Winslow AZ and its Standing On the Corner park, has now become a modern Route 66 photo opportunity.

Meteor Crater AZ

West of Winslow and about 6 miles off the route is the Natural Landmark, Meteor Crater.  50,000 years old and a mile wide it is recognized as the best preserved meteorite crater on Earth... AND Amy's favorite tourist item to visit. It never fails to deliver. Today was even more special as we survived 65+ mph wind gusts just to take some pictures. (notice my death grip on the hand rail)

Winona AZ

The classic song, Route 66 song states, "Don't forget Winona..." when in fact, it is VERY forgettable. Except for the bypassed 1920's Walnut Canyon Bridge.

  1. I have no words for the picture of Ray riding the rabbit.
