Day 6 - Oklahoma City OK to Amarillo TX - 260 miles

As we leave Oklahoma's capital city, Route 66 begins a path that parallels the Interstate more than traverse through the countryside as it has the last two days.

Yukon OK

Yukon is not only the home of the Yukon's Best Flour sign, but also the hometown of Garth Brooks AND the Country's Largest Czech Festival.

Hydro OK

Lucille's is a station built in 1929 and only one of two of its style found on Route 66

Elk City OK

The home of the National Route 66 Museum AND the world's largest Route 66 sign.

Erick OK

Unfortunately for us, the Sands Hills Curiosity shop was closed.

Even MORE unfortunate was the Roger Miller Museum was also closed. Turns out... this small Oklahoma town is the hometown of both Roger Miller AND Sheb Wooley.

Shamrock TX

Crossing into our home turf of Texas, the first stop is Shamrock with its Blarney Inn and the refurbished 1930 Conoco Tower Station and Cafe.

McLean TX

If you think you know everything about barbed wire just check out the Devil's Rope Museum.  Of all the campy "museums" we've stopped at, this one was very comprehensive.

Not only was this little station the first Phillips Station in Texas, it is also the first one restored on Route 66.

Groom TX

The Leaning Water Tower of Groom...  purposely built this way to bring attention to a now defunct truck stop,

The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ was, at the time it was built in 1995, the largest cross in North America topping out at 190 ft. tall.  Not a traditional Route 66 attraction, but you can help but check it out as you travel the route.

Amarillo TX

Serving steaks since 1960, The Big Texan, offers a free 72 oz sirloin... IF you can eat it in 60 minutes.  It is as "Texan" as you can get.
